CHICAGO — Two individuals were hospitalized and three lanes were shut down for hours after a car crashed into an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) truck early Sunday morning on the Dan Ryan Expressway, authorities said.
The crash occurred just before 2:30 a.m. on southbound I-94 near West 83rd Street, according to the Illinois State Police (ISP). The impact left the left three lanes closed for approximately four hours while investigators and emergency responders worked the scene.
Injuries Reported, Lanes Closed for Hours
According to ISP’s preliminary investigation, the vehicle struck a stationary IDOT truck on the expressway. Both individuals in the car sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital. Their current conditions have not been released.
Police did not confirm whether the IDOT worker was in or near the truck at the time of the crash.
All lanes reopened by 7 a.m., ISP confirmed, restoring full access to one of Chicago’s busiest highways as morning traffic began to build.
Investigation Ongoing
As of now, no citations or charges have been announced, and the incident remains under investigation. Authorities have not shared whether drugs, alcohol, or speed were factors in the collision.
The crash adds to growing concerns around worker safety and driver behavior on major Illinois roadways. IDOT trucks are commonly used in early morning hours for maintenance and road support — especially along high-traffic corridors like the Dan Ryan.
