Edgewater Aldi Employee Stabbed by Shoplifter During Confrontation

EDGEWATER — A routine afternoon shift at a North Side grocery store turned violent Friday when a 41-year-old employee was stabbed by a shoplifter inside an Aldi store on North Broadway, according to police.

The incident happened around 2:09 p.m. at the Aldi located at 6221 North Broadway, when the employee attempted to stop a man who had allegedly stolen merchandise. Chicago Police said that during the confrontation, the suspect pulled a knife and stabbed the worker in the leg.

Victim Hospitalized After Violent Encounter

Emergency services transported the injured employee to St. Francis Hospital, where he was initially listed in good condition, authorities confirmed. Police did not release the victim’s name but stated that his injuries were not life-threatening.

Suspect Fled to Train Tracks, Later Caught

Following the stabbing, the suspect fled the store and was tracked to the Granville Red Line station, where he reportedly ran onto the train tracks to evade arrest. Despite the attempt to flee, police located and apprehended the man, who has not yet been identified by name or age.

The knife used in the assault was recovered by officers in the parking lot of a Whole Foods store located a few blocks south of the crime scene.

Charges Pending as Investigation Continues

At the time of reporting, charges are pending, and authorities have not confirmed whether the suspect had prior incidents involving theft or violence. No additional injuries were reported.

This stabbing marks the latest in a series of retail-related assaults across Chicago, where employees have increasingly become targets of aggression during attempted thefts.

Community Safety Concerns

The incident has raised alarm among Edgewater residents and store employees alike. “It’s frightening,” said one nearby shopper. “People come to work just to make a living — and now they have to worry about getting stabbed?”

Local store managers and community leaders are urging increased police presence around retail areas, especially near Red Line stations where suspects often flee.
