Edgewater Train Fatality Disrupts CTA Red and Purple Line Service During Morning Commute

EDGEWATER, CHICAGO — Red and Purple Line CTA service was disrupted Tuesday morning after a man was fatally struck by a train at the Granville station in Edgewater, causing widespread delays and requiring emergency shuttle buses for stranded commuters.

According to Chicago Police, the incident occurred around 9 a.m., and the man was pronounced dead on the scene. His identity has not yet been released, and Area Three detectives have launched a full investigation.

CTA Disruptions and Emergency Response

Immediately following the incident, CTA trains began bypassing Granville in both directions, and service between Wilson and Howard was suspended. Riders were left scrambling during the busy morning rush.

CTA officials quickly deployed shuttle buses between Howard and Wilson, eventually restoring full service later in the day.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported the event as a medical emergency on the tracks. Meanwhile, WGN-TV confirmed that the incident triggered a temporary shutdown of northbound train movement while authorities investigated and emergency teams cleared the scene.

Ongoing Investigation

Detectives are working to determine the circumstances that led to the man’s death. As of now, no foul play has been confirmed, but police are urging the public to come forward if they have information.

“Anyone with details related to the incident is encouraged to contact CPD Area Three Detectives at 312-744-8263 or submit an anonymous tip via CPDtip.com,” said a police spokesperson.

Safety and System Impacts

Edgewater commuters voiced frustration over the lack of early updates and alternate transportation planning. While the CTA did respond within a reasonable timeframe, critics say the ongoing pattern of medical emergencies and track shutdowns is highlighting broader concerns about transit safety and communication.
