WESTERN SPRINGS — A tragic motorcycle crash involving a semi-truck brought traffic to a standstill on southbound I-294 near Western Springs early Tuesday afternoon, leaving one person dead and prompting a major investigation by Illinois State Police.
The collision occurred near mile marker 27, just south of the Ogden Avenue exit, around 12:30 p.m., according to officials. Authorities say the motorcyclist was traveling in the left-center lane when they collided with a semi-truck under circumstances that are still under investigation.
Motorcyclist Pronounced Dead at the Scene
Emergency crews responded quickly, but the rider — whose identity has not yet been publicly released — was pronounced dead at the scene. Traffic cameras showed the motorcycle wreckage severely damaged and lying near the median divider, while the involved semi-truck remained stopped farther down the lane.
Illinois State Police District 15 confirmed the fatality and stated that accident reconstruction officers were brought to the scene, requiring a complete closure of the southbound lanes during peak afternoon hours.
Hourslong Road Closure Snarls Traffic
The southbound lanes of I-294 were shut down between Ogden Avenue and 75th Street for several hours while investigators documented the crash and cleared debris. Traffic was backed up for miles as drivers were rerouted off the tollway, leading to significant congestion on local roads throughout Hinsdale, Western Springs, and parts of Burr Ridge.
Commuters and commercial drivers alike were advised to avoid the area until the lanes reopened later in the evening. By approximately 5:30 p.m., all lanes had been cleared and traffic began flowing again, according to the Illinois Tollway Authority.
Recent Pattern of Motorcycle Fatalities in Illinois
This fatality marks at least the third deadly motorcycle crash on Illinois expressways in just two weeks, as warmer summer weather brings out more riders — and with it, increased risks.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), motorcycle fatalities rose by over 18% statewide in 2023, with urban expressways like I-294, I-90, and I-55 representing some of the most dangerous corridors due to speed and congestion.
Safety advocates continue to urge both drivers and motorcyclists to remain alert during high-travel holiday periods. July 4th week is historically one of the busiest and deadliest times on the road.
Investigation Ongoing
The Will County Coroner’s Office is expected to perform an autopsy and release the name of the deceased rider once next of kin are notified. Authorities have not yet indicated whether any citations or charges will be filed against the driver of the semi-truck.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage is urged to contact ISP District 15 at their non-emergency number.
