ILLINOIS — Former REO Speedwagon lead singer Terry Luttrell was hospitalized after a serious car crash in Illinois following a reunion concert, according to multiple news reports.
The 78-year-old musician had just finished performing at a “legacy reunion show” at the State Farm Center in Champaign when the accident occurred. Luttrell reportedly fell asleep at the wheel during a late-night drive after the performance, causing his car to roll over.
Injuries From the Crash
Luttrell told the News-Gazette that he suffered a broken sternum and other injuries, but emphasized that he was in stable condition. “It just happened,” he recalled, describing how exhaustion may have led to the crash. He had reportedly stayed up late signing autographs for fans, only to hit the road shortly afterward with little rest.
Fans and Fellow Musicians Show Support
Despite the scare, Luttrell has remained in good spirits. While recovering in the hospital, he noted that some of the nurses treating him were at the concert. Kevin Cronin, who replaced Luttrell as REO Speedwagon’s frontman in the 1970s, shared a heartfelt message on social media:
“I just heard about Terry Luttrell’s car accident … I wish him the best on a speedy recovery.”
Drummer Michael Mesey commented on the incident’s severity, telling the Daily Mail that Luttrell was lucky to have survived. “He is very blessed to have walked away from this accident — mainly a blessing from God and the airbags in his BMW.”
A Celebrated Return Turns Frightening
The concert itself had been a nostalgic moment for longtime fans, reuniting former members of the legendary Illinois-born rock group for a night honoring their decades-long legacy. The event came just months after REO Speedwagon announced it would stop touring by the end of 2025.
Luttrell, who sang on the band’s self-titled 1971 debut album, has remained a local music icon. This accident, however, reminded fans how fragile even triumphant moments can be.
What’s Next For Luttrell
Though facing a recovery that may take weeks or months, Luttrell remains positive. “It’s nothing that can’t be overcome,” he said in his interview. His fans — and bandmates — are hopeful for a full recovery and are continuing to send support.
