CHICAGO — Drivers heading out of the city on the Kennedy Expressway should prepare for new delays beginning next week, as the outbound ramp to Fullerton Avenue is set to close for critical bridge repairs starting Monday, June 16.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the ramp from I-90/I-94 to Fullerton Avenue (Exit 47A) was originally scheduled to shut down earlier this month. However, the closure was rescheduled for June 16 and will last for approximately two weeks, weather permitting.
Detours & Congestion Expected
-
The closure affects outbound traffic heading northwest toward Fullerton Avenue and the Western Avenue corridor.
-
Detours will be posted, but motorists are strongly encouraged to use alternate routes or allow extra travel time.
-
This ramp plays a key role for daily commuters navigating the North Side, making congestion likely during peak travel hours.
“This is part of a broader push to enhance infrastructure safety and integrity along one of the city’s busiest corridors,” officials said.
Background on the Construction Effort
The ramp closure is part of ongoing bridge rehabilitation and structural improvements initiated by IDOT to extend the life of expressway interchanges. Work in this zone aims to:
-
Improve long-term safety
-
Reduce emergency maintenance needs
-
Upgrade aging infrastructure that sees tens of thousands of vehicles daily
