ILLINOIS — Drivers across the state are catching a break at the pump as gas prices remain relatively stable heading into what AAA forecasts will be a record-breaking Fourth of July travel weekend.
According to AAA spokesperson Nick Chabarria, Illinois residents are seeing only modest increases in gas prices compared to last week — and the prices are still notably cheaper than this time last year.
“The average today in Illinois is $3.48, up about four cents from last week,” Chabarria said. “But again, not anything too significant and still cheaper by about 12 to 30 cents compared to last year.”
Missouri Drivers See Slight Uptick, But Prices Stay Low
In neighboring Missouri, gas prices are even more favorable, with statewide averages holding at $2.86 per gallon, just a penny above last week’s rate.
Chabarria noted that despite uncertainty from ongoing conflict in the Middle East, oil and fuel prices have remained in check for the moment.
“Tensions may be de-escalating, which is good news for keeping oil and gas prices in check,” he told KBSI. “Barring any major disruptions or escalation, drivers right now stand to see some year-over-year savings.”
Record Travel Predicted for July 4th Weekend
Despite high travel volumes, fuel prices are not spiking as they often do during major holidays. AAA projects record-breaking numbers of Americans traveling both by car and air this Independence Day.
“We’re wondering how long we’ll be able to keep saying this, but AAA is forecasting a record-breaking amount of travel for the Fourth of July holiday,” Chabarria added.
Fuel-Saving Tips from AAA for Long Weekend Trips
To help travelers save on gas, AAA is encouraging drivers to check their vehicles before hitting the road:
-
Change your oil
-
Rotate and inflate tires
-
Ensure your engine is running efficiently
Proper preparation not only prevents breakdowns but also improves fuel efficiency, helping offset any price bumps at the pump.
