Grand Crossing Teen Fatally Shot in Early Morning Drive-By; Police Search for Suspect Ongoing

CHICAGO — A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot in an early morning drive-by attack in the Grand Crossing neighborhood on Sunday, prompting a police investigation and renewed concerns over summer gun violence targeting Chicago youth.

According to Chicago police, the shooting occurred just before 2 a.m. Sunday in the 6900 block of South Indiana Avenue. The teen was standing outside when someone in a black sedan drove by and opened fire, striking him in the chest.

Teen Died at University of Chicago Hospital

Emergency crews transported the boy to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity has not been released pending notification of his family.

Police have not announced any arrests and have not identified a suspect in connection with the shooting. The black sedan reportedly fled northbound after the gunfire erupted.

Community Reels From Another Youth Killing

Neighbors expressed frustration at the continued cycle of violence claiming the lives of Chicago’s youth.

“This is becoming too common,” said one resident, who asked not to be named. “These are children dying in the streets and nothing is changing.”

Local anti-violence advocates say that the attack marks yet another grim reminder of how vulnerable teens are during summer weekends.

Drive-By Shootings Still a Problem in South Side Neighborhoods

Chicago has seen an increase in drive-by shootings in several South Side neighborhoods in recent years, including Grand Crossing, Auburn Gresham, and Englewood.

In many cases, police say retaliation, gang disputes, or mistaken identity are often behind these fast-moving, targeted attacks.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the latest incident to contact Area One detectives or submit tips anonymously via CPD’s tip line.

Investigation Ongoing

At this time, no motive has been officially confirmed. Detectives continue to canvass the area for surveillance footage, speak to witnesses, and gather forensic evidence.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has not released the teen’s name as of Sunday afternoon.

Call for Community Help

Police are asking for the public’s help in solving this case. Anyone with information about the black sedan or its occupants is urged to call (312) 747-8380 or submit tips anonymously to cpdtip.com.
