HIGHLAND PARK — Police in Highland Park are investigating a hate crime after residents in the 900 block of Marion Avenue received an antisemitic letter Sunday evening, prompting a strong emergency response and federal involvement.
Hate Message Prompts Police and Hazmat Response
According to city officials, the disturbing letter was reported around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, containing antisemitic remarks, although the exact content of the letter has not been publicly disclosed. The incident sparked a rapid response that included local police, a hazardous materials team, and the FBI, who were notified as part of the city’s coordination with state terrorism officials.
By 10:30 p.m., authorities deemed the area non-toxic, confirming that there were no environmental dangers associated with the letter.
City Officials Condemn Hate and Reaffirm Community Support
In an official statement, the city strongly denounced the incident:
“We understand that reports such as this are deeply disturbing, frightening, and offensive. The city unequivocally condemns antisemitism and all acts of hate, standing in solidarity with our Jewish community.”
Mayor Nancy Rotering echoed those sentiments in a late-night statement:
“An act of antisemitism reported in our community tonight has shaken many of us, and understandably so… We will not be intimidated. We will not be silent. We will meet hate with unity — and with the full strength of our community.”
Increased Monitoring and Ongoing Investigation
Police confirmed they had already been closely monitoring houses of worship amid recent global spikes in antisemitic incidents. That vigilance will now continue with added urgency.
Highland Park authorities are urging residents with any information to reach out. Concerned community members can call (847) 432-7730 or email cityhp@cityhpil.com with questions or tips regarding the ongoing investigation.
