Illinois and Indiana Lawmakers Split Over Trump’s Strikes on Iranian Nuclear Sites

CHICAGO — Elected officials from Illinois and Indiana are voicing sharply divided opinions after former President Donald Trump announced military strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities—Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan—over the weekend, igniting a wave of political backlash and legal questions over executive power.

Trump’s Announcement Sparks Swift Fallout

On Saturday night, Trump called the strikes a “spectacular military success,” warning of “far greater” retaliation if Iran does not “make peace.” However, the move came without prior consultation or approval from Congress, triggering a storm of criticism from Democratic lawmakers and cautious support from Republicans.

Illinois Democrats swiftly denounced the decision, questioning both the legality and potential consequences of bypassing congressional authority.

Illinois Leaders Call for Accountability and Diplomacy

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) said in a statement that the president’s decision to bomb Iran pushes the U.S. toward “a wider war in the Middle East” and was made without constitutionally required approval. He blamed the current crisis on Trump’s previous decision to withdraw from the Iran Nuclear Deal.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) echoed the concern, stating the administration has put “American troops and citizens at risk of retaliation” and added that diplomacy should have been exhausted before any military engagement.

Rep. Robin Kelly (D-IL) shared her condemnation on X, formerly Twitter, asserting that the strikes will “cause more violence, destruction, and conflict,” not peace.

As reported by CBS Chicago, Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL) went a step further, calling the president’s action an “unambiguous impeachable offense,” emphasizing that military strikes without congressional approval violate constitutional norms.

Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García (D-IL) added that “Trump is trying to drag us into an illegal war with Iran,” stating there is no military solution to nuclear deterrence.

Republican Lawmakers Defend the Move

On the other side, some Republican members defended Trump’s decision.

Rep. Mike Bost (R-IL) said he trusted the president’s judgment, citing “intelligence indicating Iran was close to developing nuclear weapons.” He supported the action as necessary to prevent threats to American lives.

Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) hailed the strikes as “a great victory” and praised Trump for maintaining “peace through strength.”

Indiana’s Response: Caution from Across the Border

From neighboring Indiana, Rep. Frank Mrvan (D-IN) urged caution, stating, “No one believes Iran should have nuclear weapons, but military actions must be deliberate and done in close consultation with Congress.” He stressed the need to “prevent another prolonged military conflict.”

Local Advocacy Groups Weigh In

Ahmed Rehab, executive director of the Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), criticized the attack as “an illegal and unjustified act of war,” saying that U.S. foreign policy is appearing more reactive to foreign leaders than reflective of domestic democratic processes.

Why It Matters to Illinois Residents

This development is not just a matter of international policy—it has deep implications for Illinoisans:

  • Local military families may be impacted by the possibility of broader conflict.

  • Constitutional questions about executive power and congressional oversight remain at the center.

  • Community voices from diverse cultural and political backgrounds are urging transparency, diplomacy, and a return to democratic norms.
