Illinois Free Fishing Days Set for June 13–16

Illinois — Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just curious about casting a line, Illinois residents will have a chance to fish for free during the state’s annual Free Fishing Days, scheduled for June 13–16, 2025.

Announced by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), this special four-day event waives the usual requirements for fishing licenses, salmon stamps, and inland trout stamps — allowing everyone to enjoy the outdoors at no cost.

“The goal is to help people rediscover the joy of fishing, and especially to introduce kids to the experience,” according to the official IDNR announcement.

Who Can Fish Without a License?

During these four days:

  • No fishing license is needed for Illinois residents or non-residents

  • No salmon or trout stamps are required

  • All state fishing locations — lakes, rivers, and ponds — are eligible

The program is part of a national initiative encouraging families to explore the outdoors and boost interest in recreational fishing.

Perfect For Families, Youth Groups, And First-Timers

Community groups, schools, and youth organizations can even request free fishing equipment and educational materials from the IDNR — as long as supplies last.

A downloadable form is available on the department’s site:

“Fishing is one of the most accessible outdoor activities,” says the IDNR. “No experience needed, just curiosity and a little patience.”

What Happens After June 16?

Outside of Free Fishing Days, a license is required for anyone over 16 years of age unless they are:

  • Active-duty military personnel

  • Persons with qualifying disabilities

Standard fishing licenses in Illinois cost $15 and can be purchased through approved vendors or at ExploreMoreIL.com.
