ILLINOIS — A newly passed state law in Illinois is set to dramatically simplify the college admissions process by eliminating traditional hurdles like essays, recommendation letters, and application fees. Under the new “direct admissions” program, students can now gain college entry based solely on their Grade Point Average (GPA).
What Is the Direct Admissions Program?
The initiative, approved by Illinois lawmakers in June 2025, allows public colleges and universities across the state to automatically accept students who meet each institution’s GPA criteria.
“Students will not need to provide essays, letters of recommendation, or pay application fees,” said Jose Garcia from the Illinois Board of Higher Education, in a conversation with WNIJ. “It’s a free, streamlined entry system into college.”
Each participating school sets its own GPA threshold, but no additional testing or materials are required.

How Is This Different from the Common App?
While Illinois currently uses the Common App’s direct admission model, that system still requires students to initiate the process. Under the new law:
-
Students simply opt in by sharing GPA data with the state.
-
The state then matches students with colleges and universities where they qualify.
-
Students will receive automatic admission notifications without having to apply.
For the high school class of 2026, students must still create a Common App account and share their information manually. Starting with the class of 2027, the process becomes fully automatic through state systems.
Who Qualifies for Direct Admission?
This initiative isn’t just for high schoolers. Community college students with at least 30 credit hours who are looking to transfer to a four-year public university also qualify for direct admissions.
However, there are two exceptions:
-
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
-
University of Illinois at Chicago
These institutions will not participate directly but will instead identify eligible students and conduct outreach campaigns to encourage applications.
What’s Next for Illinois Students?
Illinois education officials aim to roll out the system over the coming academic year. Students will learn throughout the school year which institutions have admitted them directly, creating more transparency and less anxiety during the college search process.
Garcia emphasized that the goal is to “remove friction” and make college more accessible, especially for students who may not have the resources to complete traditional applications.
