ILLINOIS — A state-backed initiative is making it easier — and cheaper — for Illinois families to enjoy their summer. The Explore More Illinois program, available through local public libraries, allows residents to access free or discounted entry to museums, zoos, park districts, and more with just their library card.
The program, launched to help Illinoisans explore local culture, history, and nature without breaking the bank, is especially popular during summer months when families are seeking affordable entertainment.
Library Card Unlocks Dozens of Destinations
Residents can access the program by logging into the Explore More Illinois portal with their library barcode and PIN. Once logged in, users can search for available offers based on their home library and browse eligible dates and ticket options.
Participating sites include a mix of family-friendly destinations, educational museums, and natural spaces across the state — from the Chicago Children’s Museum and Lincoln Park Zoo to Brookfield Zoo, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, and more.

Perfect for Summer Adventures
The timing couldn’t be better. With school out and Fourth of July festivities around the corner, Illinois families are seeking low-cost local experiences. Whether it’s exploring dinosaurs at the Discovery Center Museum in Rockford or enjoying a lakeside day at Gilson Beach in Wilmette, the program opens doors to dozens of affordable options.
“People often don’t realize how much their local library offers,” one Chicago-area librarian said. “Explore More Illinois gives families access to cultural enrichment they might otherwise skip due to cost.”
