ILLINOIS. — A new campaign from Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is aiming to dramatically boost the number of organ and tissue donors statewide, spotlighting the critical need for life-saving transplants across Illinois.
The initiative, announced this week, features a series of new ads that will emphasize how one person’s choice to become a donor can significantly improve or even save the lives of others.
“Some 4,000 Illinois residents are in need of a transplant, including many whose lives hang in the balance,” Giannoulias said. “By choosing to become an organ donor, Illinoisans can catalyze a cascade of positive action, empowering recipients to pay the gift forward.”
Campaign Highlights State Need for Transplants
According to the Secretary of State’s office, Illinois currently has about 6.5 million registered organ donors, with 20,000 more signing up each month. Still, the demand remains urgent, with approximately 4,000 people on transplant waiting lists.
Each registered donor has the potential to improve the lives of up to 25 individuals, officials said.
The campaign’s first advertisement is already live and will be followed by a series of emotionally resonant stories showcasing recipients, their families, and the ripple effect of donation.
