Indianapolis Weather: Scattered Storms and Heat in the 90s to Dominate Through Sunday
INDIANAPOLIS — A combination of intense summer heat and scattered thunderstorms will sweep through central Indiana this weekend, prompting safety concerns and potential disruptions to outdoor events.
Highs Near 93°F and Storms Through Sunday
The National Weather Service in Indianapolis warns of scattered thunderstorms from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening, bringing heavy downpours and lightning that could lead to delays for outdoor plans and hazardous road conditions.
Highs will hover in the low to mid-90s, with Saturday and Monday both reaching around 93°F. When combined with humidity, heat index values may climb to 100°F, increasing the risk for heat-related illness.
Impact on Travel and Outdoor Events
Motorists traveling along I-65 and I-70 should remain alert for reduced visibility and ponding water during sudden downpours. Outdoor gatherings in Indianapolis, Carmel, and Greenwood may face delays or cancellations as thunderstorms threaten especially after midday Saturday.
“Conditions will be especially dangerous during peak heat hours. Stay hydrated, limit time outside, and check forecasts before attending any outdoor activity,” NWS officials advised.
Residents are urged to keep devices fully charged in the event of storm-induced power outages, and anyone working outdoors should take frequent breaks and find shade when possible.
Drying Out Briefly Before Next Round of Rain
The storm threat should taper off by late Sunday night, paving the way for mostly sunny skies on Monday. However, the heat will persist as temperatures remain in the low 90s.
Storm chances return on Tuesday afternoon, with another system expected to bring scattered showers and thunderstorms across the region.
