CHICAGO — A shooting at Douglass Park pool Thursday evening left one teenager dead and another seriously injured. A 55-year-old man — identified by police sources as either a lifeguard or pool supervisor — has been detained in connection with the incident.
The violence unfolded just after 7 p.m. near the basketball courts and swimming pool at 1401 South Sacramento Drive, in the city’s North Lawndale neighborhood.
One Teen Dead, Another Hospitalized
When officers arrived, they discovered:
-
A 14-year-old boy shot in the neck
-
A 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the back
Both victims were rushed to Stroger Hospital, where the 15-year-old was pronounced dead. The 14-year-old remains in serious condition, according to police.
Suspect Found Kneeling Beside Gun
Chicago Police say the suspect was found kneeling with a firearm beside him when officers arrived. He allegedly told police the two teens had “attacked” him while he was working on his bike near the pool.
The man was immediately detained at the scene as the investigation remains ongoing.
Authorities have not yet publicly confirmed his employment status, but multiple sources described him as either a lifeguard or pool supervisor affiliated with the Chicago Park District.
Investigation Ongoing
Police are still reviewing surveillance footage and collecting witness statements. It remains unclear what led to the confrontation or whether charges will be filed.
No additional injuries were reported, but the incident drew a large crowd of concerned residents and parkgoers, many of whom expressed shock that a shooting occurred at a city-operated swimming facility during summer hours.
