Man Arrested for Impersonating Police Officer With Loaded Gun at ICE Protest

CHICAGO — A 21-year-old man was arrested Thursday afternoon in the Loop for impersonating a police officer while carrying a loaded weapon during an immigration protest, according to Chicago police sources.

The incident unfolded around 5 p.m. near the 200 block of South Michigan Avenue, where officers responded to a radio call about a suspicious individual displaying police identifiers.

Man Wore Police Markings, Carried Loaded Gun

Police say the man was wearing a black polo shirt with the word “POLICE” on the back and carried a black bag affixed with a police patch. Upon confrontation, the suspect failed to present valid police credentials and was found to be carrying a loaded semi-automatic pistol openly.

Although the man had a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card, he did not possess a concealed carry license, according to police. Authorities also discovered badges and documents falsely suggesting he was part of a “special police team.”

Charges are currently pending as the investigation continues.

City Officials Respond to Rare Incident

Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Garien Gatewood addressed the situation, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense.

“This is not something we see widespread — a person impersonating Chicago Police Department,” Gatewood said. “This is one of the main reasons we’ve always pushed the ‘See Something, Say Something’ campaign.

Gatewood urged vigilance ahead of a weekend expected to draw massive protests and street activity.

Protests, Police Preparedness, and Safety Measures

The impersonation incident occurred just a day before the highly anticipated “No Kings” protest at Daley Plaza, set for Saturday at 12 p.m.. This demonstration is part of a nationwide movement, with over 1,800 rallies planned across major U.S. cities, protesting policies linked to the Trump administration.

City officials say they are prepared for the crowds.

“We have adequate resources,” Gatewood assured. “The superintendent has put together a great plan with every city agency involved, and we’re coordinating with the governor’s office as well.”

ICE Tensions, Trump’s Parade, and City Messaging

The protests are partly in response to the president’s planned military parade in Washington, which coincides with Donald Trump’s 79th birthday. There has been growing anxiety over whether ICE tactical units—allegedly on standby—could be deployed during the Chicago rallies.

Gatewood stated plainly:

“We are not going to be LA.”

To ensure public safety, city departments are circulating social media advisories, offering tips on protest conduct, street closures, and guidelines for safely engaging in demonstrations.
