CHICAGO — A 32-year-old man was fatally shot early Saturday morning in Ehrler Park, prompting a homicide investigation and multiple detainments by the Chicago Police Department, authorities said.
Shooting Reported in the Early Morning Hours
The incident unfolded around 2:50 a.m. on June 28 at 2230 West Cortland Street, located in Bucktown. Multiple 911 callers reported hearing gunfire at the park, but when officers arrived on scene, they did not find a victim.
Instead, police discovered a disturbing crime scene that included blood, pieces of clothing, drink cups, and hats scattered across the area. Witnesses told investigators they heard two loud pops and saw several vehicles speeding away from the park immediately afterward.
Victim Driven to Hospital, Later Pronounced Dead
Roughly ten minutes after the shooting, four individuals transported a 32-year-old gunshot victim to St. Mary’s Hospital. Medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival.
Police confirmed that the man had sustained a fatal gunshot wound, but they have not released his identity pending notification of next of kin.
CPD Questions Four Individuals
The four people who brought the victim to the hospital were taken in for questioning by detectives. According to officers at the scene, all four were uncooperative with investigators, offering little insight into the events that led to the shooting.
No arrests have been made, and police say the incident remains under active investigation.
Community Concerns and Safety
The shooting in Ehrler Park has heightened safety concerns in Bucktown, a neighborhood that rarely sees fatal violence in its public spaces. Early-morning gatherings, especially in less-patrolled parks, have prompted residents to call for more visible police presence and community safety patrols.
The Chicago Park District has not issued a statement on the shooting as of Saturday morning.
Anyone with Information Encouraged to Speak Up
Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or has information about the suspects to contact Area Five detectives or leave an anonymous tip with CPD’s tip line.
