Man Seriously Injured by Firework in Crystal Lake on July 4 Weekend

CRYSTAL LAKE — A Fourth of July weekend celebration in unincorporated Crystal Lake turned dangerous Saturday night after a man was seriously injured when a firework exploded directly in his face, according to fire officials.

Explosion Causes Traumatic Injury on Beach Street

Emergency crews with the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District were dispatched around 9:16 p.m. Saturday to the 1300 block of Beach Street, where a large crowd had gathered on a narrow, one-way road for holiday festivities. When first responders made their way through the crowd, they found a man with severe facial injuries, reportedly caused by a large mortar firework that struck and exploded on impact.

Due to weather conditions, a medical helicopter was unable to assist. The victim was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital for further care. His age has not been released.

Investigation Underway in McHenry County

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the incident. Additional support at the scene came from the Cary Fire Protection District, authorities confirmed.

The specific circumstances surrounding the detonation of the firework remain under review. It is not clear whether the firework was set off intentionally in a risky manner or if it malfunctioned.

Fire Officials Warn Against Dangers of Fireworks

In a statement, officials with the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District emphasized the dangers of consumer fireworks. They warned that each year, such explosives lead to thousands of preventable injuries—many of them involving the head, hands, face, or eyes. These injuries often result in permanent damage.

They urged the public to “consider the risks and prioritize safety” during any celebration involving fireworks, especially around large crowds and residential neighborhoods.

Holiday Injuries Raise Local Concerns

This incident comes amid a series of injuries across the country tied to Fourth of July celebrations, renewing questions around the safety of home-based fireworks displays. Illinois law restricts certain types of fireworks, but many still find their way into neighborhood celebrations.
