MINNESOTA — A politically motivated shooting in Minnesota has left two prominent state lawmakers dead and two others injured, shaking leaders across the country — including in Illinois, where public officials are expressing growing concerns about political violence ahead of the 2024 election season.
The shooting occurred Wednesday night outside a private event in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, and claimed the lives of State Rep. Melissa Hortman, 53, and her husband Gary Hortman. State Sen. John Hoffman, 62, and his wife Tammy Hoffman were also critically wounded.
Attack Labeled ‘Domestic Terrorism’
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz confirmed the incident during a press briefing, describing the attack as a “targeted act of domestic terrorism.” He said, “This was not random. This was a politically motivated assault against sitting legislators.”
The suspected gunman, Matthew Kerr, 44, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder. Authorities say Kerr had a documented history of anti-government beliefs and had posted online threats prior to the attack.
National Fallout and Illinois Reaction
Though the shooting took place in Minnesota, its impact is reverberating through statehouses across the country — including Springfield, Illinois, where lawmakers paused legislative sessions on Thursday to hold a moment of silence.
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued a statement condemning the attack:
“This horrific act of political violence strikes at the very heart of our democracy. Melissa Hortman was a dedicated public servant. My thoughts are with both families.”
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also weighed in, noting the growing risk that political leaders face:
“When elected officials are targeted for their beliefs, we’re all at risk. Chicago stands with the people of Minnesota.”
Security Boosts for Illinois Officials
The Illinois State Police confirmed Thursday that they are coordinating with local law enforcement agencies to reevaluate security protocols for elected officials, particularly during campaign events and public appearances.
“We are taking this very seriously,” an ISP spokesperson said. “This was a chilling reminder of the threats our public servants face every day.”
Suspect’s Digital Trail Revealed Political Grievances
According to court documents, Kerr had repeatedly posted threats against state and federal lawmakers on fringe message boards, citing grievances tied to immigration policy, LGBTQ rights, and federal spending.
Investigators recovered multiple weapons and detailed plans for additional attacks at Kerr’s residence. The FBI has now joined the investigation, and federal charges are pending.
Community in Shock as Tributes Pour In
Hortman, a Democrat who had served in the Minnesota House for over two decades, was widely respected across party lines for her environmental and education advocacy. Her husband, Gary, was a local attorney.
Sen. Hoffman remains in critical condition, according to doctors at North Memorial Health Hospital. His wife, Tammy, is reportedly in stable condition.
Candlelight vigils were held across Minnesota Wednesday night, with participants calling for unity and the protection of democratic institutions.
Why It Matters to Illinois Voters
This incident highlights a national trend of increased political aggression, with implications for voters and leaders in Illinois as the 2024 election cycle intensifies.
As one Chicago resident shared online:
“If it can happen there, it can happen here. We need to stay vigilant — and protect the people who represent us.”
