ILLINOIS — A new COVID-19 variant known as NB.1.8.1, or “Nimbus,” is now responsible for an estimated 43% of new COVID-19 cases nationwide — and it’s already been confirmed in Illinois.
The variant, which has virologists watching closely, has spread to at least 18 U.S. states, including California, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois, according to the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data and the World Health Network.
What Is the ‘Nimbus’ Variant?
Nicknamed after its official strain name NB.1.8.1, the variant is an offshoot of the LP.8.1 strain, which had dominated case counts in previous months. First identified in China in January 2025, Nimbus has since spread to at least 22 countries, as reported by USA TODAY.
Experts call it a “slightly upgraded” version of its predecessor — highly transmissible, but not linked to more severe illness based on current data.
What Are the Symptoms of NB.1.8.1?
Like other COVID strains, symptoms may include:
-
Fever
-
Mild cough
-
Muscle aches
-
Nasal congestion
But one distinct marker of the Nimbus variant is a painful sore throat, often described as “razor-blade throat fatigue.”
This symptom has been noted by several physicians as particularly intense, though short-lived in otherwise healthy individuals.
Are Vaccines Still Effective?
Yes. Updated COVID-19 vaccines are still considered the best defense against serious illness, according to public health officials.
However, vaccination rates vary by region, and experts continue to urge eligible residents to get their updated booster shots, especially amid rising transmission of the Nimbus variant.
