North Suburbs Mass Shooting: Child Among 6 Injured, Armed Guest Kills Suspect at Harvey House Party

HARVEY, ILLINOIS — A mass shooting at a house party in Harvey left six people injured, including a 4-year-old child, and one suspect dead after an armed guest returned fire during the attack. The violence erupted Saturday night in the 14400 block of Des Plaines Street, according to local police.

Two gunmen opened fire during the party

Harvey officials said two individuals arrived and began shooting at the crowd gathered for a house party. The City of Harvey confirmed that the incident began shortly after 8 p.m.

A total of seven people were shot, including a 4-year-old boy who suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a hospital where his condition was stabilized. Four others were also hospitalized and later reported to be in stable condition.

Concealed carry holder fatally shoots one suspect

In a dramatic turn, one of the partygoers — a concealed carry license holder — drew their weapon and shot back at the attackers. One of the suspects was struck and pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by CBS Chicago.

“It’s good that someone had a weapon to return fire,” said a neighbor, 73-year-old Willie Hill, who described hearing rapid gunfire from his porch. “But the first question is, why would fire be directed to that location?”

Second suspect in custody after hospitalization

The second shooter was injured during the exchange and later apprehended after being treated at a local hospital. Their name and condition have not been released.

Michael Parker, a neighbor living across the street, said the violence hit too close to home. “Bullets fly,” he told CBS Chicago. “They don’t have a name on the bullet.”

Early morning retaliation suspected

Authorities believe a second shooting around 5 a.m. Sunday may have been a retaliatory act. Officers responded to gunfire near the 200 block of Calumet Boulevard, where they found 24-year-old Charles Lipsey dead inside a minivan from multiple gunshot wounds.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the victim, and investigators believe the incident may be connected to the earlier house party shooting.

Investigation ongoing, no further threat reported

Police say both shootings appear to be isolated incidents, and there is no ongoing threat to the public. Authorities are currently following up on leads, with assistance from cooperating witnesses. No additional details have been released.
