CHICAGO — A pedestrian was struck and killed by an Amtrak train Sunday evening in Berwyn, causing extensive service disruptions to Metra’s BNSF line during the evening commute.
The fatal collision happened around 5:04 p.m. near Harlem Avenue, when Amtrak’s Southwest Chief Train #3, headed west from Chicago Union Station to Los Angeles, struck a person who was reportedly trespassing on the tracks. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
Amtrak and Metra Confirm Fatality
Amtrak confirmed the fatal incident in a public statement, noting the train was delayed as authorities investigated. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office is handling the identification of the deceased, whose name has not yet been released.
“Amtrak is working with local authorities. Our thoughts are with all involved, including the train crew and the victim’s loved ones,” an Amtrak spokesperson said.
Metra Service Suspended, Delays Continue
Following the incident, Metra halted both inbound and outbound BNSF service near Berwyn. Service resumed about 90 minutes later, but trains continued running behind schedule throughout the evening.
By 7 p.m., Metra issued a rider alert:
“BNSF inbound and outbound train movement is on the move and may be operating with extensive delays due to a pedestrian incident near Berwyn.”
Passengers were advised to check Metra’s website or the Metra Tracker tool for real-time updates. No injuries were reported among passengers or Amtrak staff.
Safety Reminder From Officials
While the investigation remains ongoing, authorities emphasized the dangers of being on or near railway tracks. Both Amtrak and Metra reiterated that trespassing on rail property is illegal and hazardous.
“We urge all residents to stay clear of active rail lines. Even brief lapses in judgment can be deadly,” said a Berwyn police official.
Berwyn Commuters Caught Off Guard
Several west suburban residents took to social media Sunday night, expressing shock and frustration over the delays — and concern about the safety implications.
Metra’s BNSF line is one of the busiest in the region, connecting downtown Chicago to major suburbs including Berwyn, La Grange, Hinsdale, Downers Grove, and Aurora.
