Police Helicopter Tracks Down Suspects After Armed Robbery Spree Hits 14 Victims Across Chicago

CHICAGO — Four suspects have been arrested following a violent robbery spree that unfolded across several neighborhoods Wednesday night, with police deploying both ground units and a helicopter to track the offenders.

The spree, which began around 9:15 p.m. in the West Loop, saw at least 14 victims targeted in a string of armed muggings that stretched as far as Hyde Park. In many of the incidents, two to four suspects — clad in ski masks and dark clothing — confronted individuals on the street while brandishing handguns, according to police.

Multiple Robberies Across City Neighborhoods

The attacks started when a woman and two friends were held at gunpoint in the 500 block of West Madison, where the suspects stole their wallets and phones.

Within minutes, additional robberies were reported:

  • Morgan & 18th Street

  • Morgan & 16th Street

  • 100 block of South Aberdeen — A woman was robbed near her home by three armed men

  • 1600 block of West Cullerton — Two gunmen robbed a man around 9:58 p.m.

  • 3300 block of South Lowe — A woman was mugged by three assailants around 10:15 p.m.

  • 1100 block of West Pershing — Four men robbed a man of personal items

  • 31st Street & Archer Avenue

  • 4200 block of South Langley — Another armed robbery involving a phone and valuables

  • 4700 block of South Laflin

  • 5400 block of South Blackstone — Three men jumped from a vehicle to rob a victim

Each case involved force, threat with firearms, and quick escapes — often in a black Mitsubishi, later tied to multiple incidents.

Police Helicopter Leads to Arrests

Around 11:35 p.m., officers spotted the suspect vehicle near several crime scenes. A Chicago Police Department helicopter quickly picked up the chase.

The suspects bailed from the vehicle in the 800 block of East 37th Street, where four individuals were apprehended shortly after. A handgun was recovered next to the vehicle.

Investigation Underway

Detectives are now working to link the suspects to the full spree using surveillance footage, witness identifications, and other evidence. It’s not yet clear whether the same group is responsible for all 11 confirmed robbery incidents.

Police said they are coordinating interviews and forensic reviews, and more charges may be forthcoming.

Call for Public Vigilance

Authorities are urging residents to remain aware, especially in high-foot-traffic areas during evening hours.

“This was a coordinated, multi-neighborhood crime spree,” said a CPD spokesperson. “Thanks to our air unit and alert officers on the ground, we were able to bring the situation under control.”
