PORTAGE PARK — A 57-year-old man was hospitalized Saturday night after confronting a burglar who was breaking into his car in the city’s Portage Park neighborhood, according to Chicago police.
Victim Shot After Approaching Car Burglar
The shooting happened around 9:45 p.m. in the 5800 block of West Cornelia Avenue. Police say the victim noticed someone trying to break into his parked car and decided to intervene. In response, the suspect pulled out a pistol and opened fire — discharging at least eight rounds.
One of the bullets struck the man in the left leg, authorities said. He was transported to Loyola Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition.
Suspect Fled Through Nearby Alley
According to witness reports, the shooter fled eastbound through the alley between Cornelia and Newport avenues. The suspect was described as a White male wearing black clothing and a baseball cap.
As of Sunday, no arrests had been announced. Police are continuing their investigation.
Ongoing Pattern of Shootouts Involving Car Burglars
The incident is the latest in a string of violent encounters between vehicle owners and burglars across Chicago in recent months:
-
In March, a concealed carry holder on the Far South Side shot a man breaking into his car.
-
On April 6, in South Shore, a 38-year-old man got into a shootout with three burglars and was shot in the back and buttocks.
-
On April 8, a 66-year-old man in Pilsen also exchanged fire with car burglars and was shot in the leg.
-
On April 28, an off-duty CPD officer engaged burglars in West Lawn, suffering a minor ear injury — it’s unclear if it was from a bullet or shrapnel.
These incidents highlight a disturbing trend of increased violence surrounding car burglaries in the city.
Call for Tips and Community Caution
Police are urging anyone with information about Saturday’s shooting to contact detectives. Neighbors are also encouraged to avoid directly confronting suspects and instead call 911 immediately if they witness suspicious activity.
