Prolonged Wildfire Smoke Prompts Air Quality Alert for Chicago as Heat Builds Into Weekend

CHICAGO — Hazy skies and lingering wildfire smoke have prompted an air quality alert for the Chicago area, with forecasters warning of health risks and a stretch of hotter, more humid weather in the days ahead.

Smoke Lingers, Skies Stay Hazy

According to a forecast from FOX 32 Chicago, the smoke is once again affecting visibility and air quality across Chicagoland. Skies today will feature a hazy sun, with temperatures rising into the mid to upper 80s. Residents sensitive to air pollution — including those with asthma or other respiratory conditions — are urged to limit prolonged outdoor activity.

Tonight is expected to remain clear to partly cloudy with some haze and lows in the upper 60s to low 70s.

Weather Pattern Shifts Later in the Week

A line of thunderstorms is expected to approach from the northwest Thursday morning but is likely to weaken before reaching most of the area. Thursday will turn mostly sunny and may see a slight reduction in smoke, with highs in the upper 80s.

By Friday and Saturday, forecasters say it will be hot and humid, with highs likely exceeding 90 degrees both days. The heat will be followed by a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday, although much of the day should remain dry.

No Cooldown in Sight

Looking ahead, next week’s forecast calls for above-average temperatures to continue, with no immediate signs of a break in the heat.

Health officials advise monitoring air quality levels and taking precautions, especially on days when wildfire smoke pushes pollution into the “unhealthy” range.
