Red Cross Expects Busy 4th of July Week as Blood Donations Dip in Illinois

ILLINOIS – As Independence Day celebrations ramp up across the state, the American Red Cross is preparing for what could be a demanding week — not just in terms of emergency response but also in maintaining adequate blood supplies.

House Fires Dominate Emergency Calls This Week

In just the past week, the Red Cross responded to five different house fires in Central Illinois alone. While tornadoes and wildfires often dominate public concern, officials say house fires are the most common disaster they handle.

“People often think of tornadoes and wildfires and hurricanes, but the number one disaster we’re responding to every day is house fires,” said Mara Thompson of the Red Cross.

With fireworks, grills, and other potential hazards in play during holiday gatherings, the organization is urging residents to follow simple precautions.

Summer Safety Tips for Illinois Homes

To prevent fires and protect families during celebrations, the Red Cross recommends:

  • Never leaving flames unattended

  • Keeping grills and fireworks away from homes and cars

  • Having a fire extinguisher nearby at all times

  • Testing smoke alarms regularly

“Working smoke alarms are always the top thing we recommend,” Thompson added. “It takes about two minutes for a home fire to start and become fatal if you’re unable to get out safely.”

Ongoing Blood Shortage as Donor Numbers Drop

Alongside its disaster response, the Red Cross is issuing a separate but equally urgent plea: help reverse the seasonal decline in blood donations.

Thompson explained that summer vacations often disrupt donor habits, leading to fewer people visiting blood drives or clinics.

“We see our regular blood donors not come in as often because of vacations,” she said. “But every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood.”

The organization is encouraging Illinois residents to make time to donate during the July 4th period, when the demand is high and the supply is historically low.

According to the Red Cross, just one donation can save up to three lives, and donations are especially crucial for patients undergoing surgery, cancer treatment, or accident recovery.

How to Help This Week

The Red Cross is asking the public to step up in two critical ways:

  • Volunteer for fire response and emergency assistance programs

  • Donate blood at local drives or Red Cross centers
