CHICAGO — A 23-year-old woman and four juveniles have been charged in connection with a violent robbery aboard a CTA Red Line train last month, after police released surveillance images of the suspects that helped identify them.
Attack Began After Victim Recognized Previous Assailants
The incident occurred in the early hours of June 21, when a 28-year-old woman and her friend boarded a southbound Red Line train at Roosevelt around 1:45 a.m. According to prosecutors, the trouble began when the train reached the Garfield stop and a group of young men and women got on board. The victim immediately recognized some of the males as individuals who had previously attacked her.
Sensing danger, she moved closer to the door. But one of the suspects unzipped her backpack from behind. As she tried to protect her belongings by pulling the bag to the front of her body, multiple members of the group allegedly began punching her and trying to wrestle the bag away. She fell to the floor, landing on her backpack, while the assault continued.
Surveillance Footage Captured the Assault
The situation escalated when Aallyah Gist, the only adult charged, allegedly approached and began kicking the victim in the head and body while another male restrained her. One of the attackers then used a knife to cut the backpack straps, successfully stealing the bag. The group exited the train at the 69th Street stop, and the injured victim sought help from nearby K-9 security officers.
Chicago Police later released surveillance images on June 28 showing the suspects during the attack. Gist soon turned herself in and, according to prosecutors, admitted to her involvement, specifically acknowledging that she was the one who kicked the victim.
Charges Filed Against All Suspects
Gist has been charged with armed robbery and aggravated battery, but a judge declined prosecutors’ request to detain her and instead placed her on electronic monitoring, citing her lack of prior criminal history.
According to a Chicago Police Department spokesperson, the four juveniles face the following charges:
- Three boys, ages 14 and 15, have been charged with armed robbery with a dangerous weapon.
- One 14-year-old girl faces three felony charges: armed robbery with a dangerous weapon, robbery, and aggravated battery to a transit employee.
Due to state privacy laws, further information on the juveniles has not been released.
Community Reaction and CTA Security Concerns
This incident comes amid rising concerns about safety on Chicago’s public transit system, with repeated reports of assaults and robberies on trains. Riders have increasingly called for more visible security patrols, especially during overnight hours.
Surveillance footage played a crucial role in this case, once again highlighting the role of CTA cameras in identifying suspects and aiding police investigations. CWB Chicago first reported the charges and court details in this developing case.
