ILLINOIS — A known gang member from Rockford has been sentenced to 78 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges related to drug trafficking and firearm possession, according to federal prosecutors.
Jovino Ramirez, 35, was arrested during a traffic stop in May 2024, during which he was found to be in possession of narcotics and a loaded handgun.
Drugs and Gun Found During Traffic Stop
Authorities say Ramirez was pulled over by police and attempted to conceal narcotics during the stop. Officers recovered 19.1 grams of cocaine and 1.9 grams of methamphetamine, both hidden inside the vehicle.
A loaded firearm was also discovered under the driver’s seat, according to WTVO.
Ramirez was later charged with:
-
Possession with intent to deliver cocaine and meth
-
Unlawful possession of a loaded firearm
-
Being a gang member in possession of a weapon
Federal Sentencing and Criminal Background
On Monday, Ramirez was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Iain Jonson in the Northern District Court of Illinois. His prison term totals 78 months, equivalent to six and a half years behind bars.
At the time of the arrest, Ramirez had a criminal history involving gang activity and was on law enforcement’s radar as a habitual offender.
This case adds to a growing number of federal prosecutions targeting armed habitual criminals involved in street-level narcotics trafficking.
