SAY of Chicago League Empowers Youth Through Soccer on UIC South Side Fields

CHICAGO — WGN’s “Around Town” recently featured SAY of Chicago, a volunteer-run youth soccer league bringing summer fun to hundreds of children on the University of Illinois at Chicago’s South Side fields .

More Than Just Soccer

Operating for nearly 40 years, SAY of Chicago offers coed recreational play for kids aged 3 to 15, emphasizing fun, teamwork, and inclusivity. The league divides players into five age groups—from U5 through U15—and upholds strict heat-safety policies and volunteer coaching that promotes mentorship.

Teams play Tuesday and Friday evenings, with matches beginning mid‑June and running through early August. The season kicked off June 17, and U5 teams took the field at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20.

Community‑Driven League

SAY of Chicago relies fully on parent volunteers—coaches, assistant coaches, and team managers—to run efficiently. Registration covers uniforms, awards, field referees (for U9+), and more — all for an affordable fee as low as $75 for the youngest groups.

The league unites kids from diverse neighborhoods, offering a “kids having fun” experience alongside holistic development through play.

From Screen to Field

The league’s appearance on WGN’s “Around Town” — featuring interviews with kids, parents, and volunteer coaches — is a testament to its community value. Parent and coach sentiments highlight:

“Not your average league — it’s all about fun and team spirit.”
