Security Guard Carjacked Near Wicker Park — 1 Suspect Caught, 3 Others Flee in SUV

CHICAGO — A 32-year-old armed security guard was carjacked at gunpoint just after midnight Tuesday in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood, prompting a multi-agency response that led to one arrest and three suspects escaping, according to CWB Chicago.

The incident unfolded around 12:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of North Bosworth Avenue, near Wicker Park. Police say the guard was sitting inside his orange Dodge Charger when four masked men approached with guns and ordered him out of the car. The suspects then fled in the Charger, which had a firearm inside.

Helicopter Tracks Suspects to South Lawndale

Officers quickly spotted the Charger, accompanied by a white SUV, near Taylor Street and Sacramento Avenue. A Chicago Police Department helicopter tracked the Charger as it fled to the 1900 block of South Trumbull, where it stopped beneath the Pink Line tracks.

According to police, one suspect fled on foot but was caught shortly after by officers aided by the helicopter’s thermal imaging. The security guard’s firearm was still in the vehicle, authorities confirmed.

The three remaining suspects jumped into the white SUV and fled — but not before striking and dragging a CPD officer as they sped away. That officer’s condition has not been disclosed.

Linked to Earlier North Side Robberies

The carjacking happened roughly 20 minutes after a robbery spree in Lakeview and Lincoln Park that also involved suspects in a white SUV. In that earlier incident, four people were robbed between 11:30 p.m. and 12:05 a.m. — with at least two victims held at gunpoint by men fleeing in a white vehicle.

Police believe the two incidents may be connected, though the investigation remains ongoing. The white SUV used by the suspects was later recovered in the 4300 block of West Gladys Avenue around 1 a.m., shortly after the arrest of the suspect who fled the Charger.
