Security Guard Injured By Hit-And-Run Driver Near Wrigley Field — Fires Shot In Response

WRIGLEYVILLE — A private security guard assisting police in Wrigleyville early Sunday morning was struck by a hit-and-run driver — prompting the guard to fire a shot in self-defense, according to Chicago police.

Incident Unfolds During Police Traffic Stop

The altercation occurred just after 2:15 a.m. Sunday in the 3500 block of North Clark Street, as officers were attempting to stop a light-colored SUV for speeding. A 34-year-old armed security guard, who was helping the officers with the stop, was struck by the vehicle as it attempted to flee, police said.

“The driver hit the guard during the attempted stop, and the guard responded by firing a single shot,” a Chicago Police Department spokesperson said.

The SUV was last seen heading northbound on Clark Street. Authorities have not released further details about the driver.

The injured security guard was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center by the Chicago Fire Department. He was treated for shoulder and shin injuries and was last reported in fair condition, police confirmed.

Fortunately, no one was hit by the gunfire, and police have not reported any additional injuries stemming from the incident.

Investigation Ongoing

Police have not said whether any shell casings were recovered from the scene or whether the guard’s firearm was lawfully discharged. It’s unclear at this time whether the guard is licensed for armed security work in Chicago.

The CPD has not indicated whether surveillance footage has been reviewed or if they have a description of the suspect behind the wheel.
