CHICAGO — A semi-truck driver was killed late Wednesday night in a rollover crash that brought traffic to a standstill on the Kennedy Expressway, according to the Illinois State Police.
The fatal incident happened in the southbound lanes near Belmont Avenue, where the semi-truck — reportedly carrying meat products — overturned and blocked multiple lanes of traffic.
Driver Pronounced Dead After Being Hospitalized
Illinois State Police said the driver was transported to a nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly afterward. The identity of the driver has not been released as authorities notify family members.
The semi-truck flipped over, scattering its cargo and leaving the vehicle badly damaged. Emergency responders worked through the night to clear the wreckage and assess the scene.
Traffic Impact and Investigation
For several hours, lanes in both directions were closed, causing significant delays for early morning commuters. All lanes were finally reopened by 6:30 a.m. Thursday morning, police confirmed.
At this time, it is unclear what caused the rollover. Investigators have not released details regarding whether any other vehicles were involved or if weather or mechanical failure played a role.

Residents in the area and frequent expressway commuters expressed grief and frustration online, with many urging for improved safety protocols and better response infrastructure to avoid prolonged delays in similar future events.
