NORTH DAKOTA – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for nine counties across western and central North Dakota, with the National Weather Service (NWS) warning of potentially dangerous conditions including 60 mph winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall through 1 a.m. Monday.
The watch, first issued Saturday evening, was later expanded to include two additional counties in the south-central region.
Impacted counties now include McKenzie, Adams, Billings, Bowman, Dunn, Golden Valley, Hettinger, Slope, and Stark, along with Grant and Sioux counties. Cities under threat include Watford City, Dickinson, Bowman, and Beach.
Widespread Hazards Expected Across the Region
The NWS alert warns of significant damage potential to vehicles, crops, power lines, and structures. With winds reaching up to 60 miles per hour and isolated hail events, residents are urged to stay off roadways when possible.
Travelers should exercise caution, especially in rural areas, where reduced visibility from downpours and blowing debris could create hazardous driving conditions.
Preparedness Tips and Safety Advice
Residents in affected counties are encouraged to:
- Stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel
- Secure outdoor furniture or equipment
- Monitor NOAA weather alerts or trusted local news sources
- Prepare for possible power outages
