Wildfire smoke from Canada is expected to drift into the Chicago area by Friday afternoon, according to ABC7 Accuweather Meteorologist Jaisol Martinez, raising concerns over air quality and visibility into the weekend.
Martinez stated that a wind shift from the north and northwest will carry the smoke into Illinois by midday Friday, with heavier concentrations arriving around sunset.
What Residents Should Expect
While the air quality across Chicago was measured between good to moderate on Friday morning, meteorologists caution that it could dip to “unhealthy for sensitive groups”—especially by evening and into the weekend.
Martinez also warned that some smoke may move into lower parts of the atmosphere, which could have stronger effects on those with respiratory issues, children, or older adults.
“We’re looking at a smoke pattern that may linger into Saturday,” Martinez said. “It’s important for vulnerable residents to check air quality before outdoor activity.”
The Source: Canadian Wildfire Emergency
The incoming smoke is part of a larger crisis unfolding in Manitoba, where a state of emergency has been declared following widespread wildfires.
According to Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew, the fires have triggered the largest evacuation in living memory, displacing more than 17,000 people.
“The military is being called for help here because of the sheer scale,” Kinew told reporters. “We are grateful Prime Minister Mark Carney responded immediately.”
The military has been deployed to assist with evacuations, shelter, and logistics as fires continue to threaten communities across the province.
What You Can Do in Chicago
Local health officials recommend the following precautions for at-risk residents:
-
Check daily air quality alerts via AirNow.gov
-
Limit outdoor activity if smoke is visible or alerts are active
-
Use air purifiers indoors or wear N95 masks when needed
-
Keep windows closed if air quality deteriorates
Residents with asthma, heart conditions, or other respiratory issues should be especially cautious.
