CHICAGO — A 27-year-old man is fighting for his life after being stabbed during a violent altercation Tuesday evening on the South Side, according to police.
The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. in the 7800 block of South Sangamon Street, where the victim reportedly became involved in a physical dispute with an unidentified individual. During the fight, the suspect produced a sharp object and stabbed the man in the abdomen, authorities said.
Emergency responders transported the victim to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition as of Tuesday night.
Investigation Underway, No Arrests Yet
The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the identity or motive behind the stabbing has not been released.
Area Two Detectives are leading the investigation. Police have not disclosed whether the incident was domestic, gang-related, or random in nature.
According to WGN News, the stabbing marks yet another violent episode in a part of the city that has already seen multiple assaults and shootings in recent weeks.
Ongoing Violence in the South Side
This incident comes just days after a violent July 4th weekend in Chicago, during which more than 100 people were shot, and 19 killed across the city — many of them on the South and West Sides.
The latest stabbing is part of a troubling trend of close-contact violence, including robberies and domestic disputes, that have escalated in recent months. CPD statistics show a slight uptick in aggravated batteries in Englewood and Auburn Gresham, which overlap the 7800 South Sangamon area.
Local organizations continue to call for more violence prevention programs and mental health resources in communities most impacted by violent crime.
