A suburban Chicago doctor who admitted to a multi-million-dollar fraud scheme targeting Medicaid and private insurers is now awaiting sentencing in federal court.
Dr. Mona Ghosh, formerly the owner of Progressive Women’s Healthcare in Hoffman Estates, pleaded guilty last year to health care fraud charges after prosecutors uncovered a pattern of billing for medical services that were never performed or were medically unnecessary.
The Case Details
Ghosh, who was a licensed physician at the time, allegedly submitted fraudulent claims for both in-person and telehealth visits. The fraud totaled more than $1.5 million, according to her plea agreement.
The claims were submitted to both Medicaid and private insurers, and in many cases, procedures were pushed on patients despite being unnecessary—or never conducted at all.
Patient Testimonies
So far, two witnesses have testified during Ghosh’s sentencing hearing at the Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago. Both expressed feelings of betrayal, recounting how Ghosh falsified patient records and misled them about their health needs.
“She lied about what we discussed. She pressured me to get procedures I didn’t want or need,” one witness said.
More witnesses are expected to testify before sentencing concludes. The hearing is expected to last two days, with Ghosh present for all testimonies.
What’s Next
Ghosh is facing a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison under federal law. Prosecutors have not publicly indicated what specific sentence they will recommend.
Her clinic, Progressive Women’s Healthcare, is now closed.
