The shooting occurred just before 10 p.m. in the 600 block of East 31st Street Drive, a stretch that runs adjacent to the popular 31st Street Beach. Police say a physical altercation broke out between several individuals, during which multiple gunshots were fired.
The teen was struck once in the abdomen. Emergency responders transported him to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Investigation Ongoing
The case has been handed over to Area One detectives, who continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses. Police have not released details about any suspects or weapons recovered from the scene.
The shooting underscores the growing concern over youth-involved violence in Chicago, particularly in popular gathering spaces during summer evenings.
Safety and Community Concerns
Wednesday night’s incident has raised concerns among community members and city officials about safety near beaches and public parks, especially as Chicago enters the height of summer.
The 31st Street Beach, officially known as Margaret T. Burroughs Beach, is a hotspot for both locals and tourists seeking lakefront recreation. Its popularity often leads to dense crowds on warm evenings, which can present challenges for crowd control and policing.
Authorities are asking anyone with information or video footage from the area around the time of the incident to contact Chicago police. Anonymous tips can also be submitted via CPD’s online portal or through Crime Stoppers.
