CHICAGO — The iconic Freeze sign has been reinstalled at 2815 W. Armitage Ave., much to the relief of Logan Square residents who feared it might be gone for good. The temporary removal came as part of ongoing renovations to convert the historic ice cream stand into a new Small Cheval restaurant.
Construction workers confirmed the sign was taken down for just two days to undergo a minor makeover — receiving new red paint, a metal enclosure, and modern LED lighting.
“Storms caused a few unexpected delays, but the sign is back in place and ready to shine,” said Marty Sandberg, architect with Via Chicago Architects + Diseñadore, which is leading the redesign.
Neighborhood Relief After Viral Concern
The sign’s sudden absence sparked immediate concern across social media and neighborhood forums, with residents stopping by in person and even pulling over in traffic to inquire about its fate.
“Our long national nightmare is finally over,” joked one Reddit user after spotting the sign back in place on June 25.
While The Freeze is not returning, the preservation of the sign serves as a nod to the building’s deep neighborhood legacy, which stretches back more than 70 years.
Small Cheval to Open Soon With Tribute Menu
The space is being transformed into a Small Cheval, a streamlined burger concept from Hogsalt Hospitality, known for:
-
Classic griddled burgers
-
Crinkle-cut fries
-
Milkshakes and cocktails
In tribute to The Freeze’s history, the new location is expected to offer dipped soft-serve cones and other nostalgic items. A new patio with tables, planters, and a walk-up window has also been added, along with fresh signage and a fully revamped interior.
“It’s going to be open year-round,” a worker said, marking a shift from the seasonal schedule of the former shop.
A Farewell to Tony Zarcone’s Legacy
The Freeze was operated for decades by Tony Zarcone, a retired firefighter who bought the spot in the late 1980s when it was still known as Tastee-Freez. He ran the beloved local business until 2023, when he sold it and relocated to Florida.
Though he acknowledged the need for upgrades, Zarcone previously told Block Club that he no longer had the energy to handle them.
