CHICAGO — Police detained three suspects following two separate stabbings on Wednesday evening in the South Loop and River North neighborhoods. Both victims were hospitalized, with one in critical condition.
South Loop: Man Stabbed at Bus Stop
Around 6:30 p.m., a 35-year-old man was stabbed while at a CTA bus stop in the 500 block of West Roosevelt Road. The suspect, a 65-year-old man, used a sharp object to stab the victim in the arm and back.
Officers arrived at the scene and located the suspect nearby. He was taken into custody without incident.
The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition. The motive is under investigation. Police noted that the attack appeared to be unprovoked, and no prior connection between the two men has been confirmed.
According to a brief statement from the Chicago Police Department, “Quick coordination between patrol units helped in detaining the suspect within minutes.”
River North: Man Attacked by Two Suspects
At approximately 9:20 p.m., a 22-year-old man was attacked in the 700 block of North State Street. According to police, the suspects — a 24-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl — punched the victim, then stabbed him on the ground and again as he attempted to flee.
The victim was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. He remains under observation.
Police utilized nearby surveillance footage and transit station cameras to track the suspects to the Grand Red Line station. Officers detained them before they could board a train and recovered a knife believed to be the weapon.
CPD credited the use of real-time camera systems and coordination with CTA security in making the swift arrests.
CPD Investigation Underway
All three suspects are in custody. Charges are pending. Detectives are currently interviewing witnesses and reviewing additional footage from nearby businesses.
Police emphasized that both stabbings appear to be isolated incidents with no connection to each other.
These stabbings come at a time when city officials have been working to expand surveillance infrastructure and patrol visibility in downtown districts.
Public Safety and Community Concerns
River North and South Loop are heavily trafficked zones, home to restaurants, nightlife venues, public transit hubs, and residential high-rises. Safety concerns have grown in recent months with increased reports of evening assaults and robberies in these areas.
Local neighborhood watch groups and alderman offices have pushed for more visible patrol units, especially during peak commute and nightlife hours.
“It’s scary to think something like this could happen while you’re just waiting for the bus,” said one commuter who passed by the South Loop scene. “There needs to be more security, especially around the transit stops.”
Safety Reminder
