Rookie Spotlight: Trapilo Gets First-Team Reps
The Chicago Bears’ 2025 offseason training activities (OTAs) are already providing surprises — none bigger than rookie offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo getting first-team reps at left tackle. With starter Braxton Jones absent from practice, the former Boston College standout has stepped up in a major way.
Trapilo, a sixth-round draft pick, wasn’t widely expected to make waves this early. But with clean technique, strong leverage, and consistent discipline in drills, he’s become one of the early stories of camp.
“He’s a very smart, very calm player,” said head coach Ben Johnson. “He does his job and doesn’t make the same mistake twice — that’s rare in a rookie.”
While it’s too early to name him a starter, Trapilo’s performance has been solid enough to stir conversation about a potential training camp battle come July.
Coach Ben Johnson Sets the Tone
Johnson, entering his first year as Bears head coach, is already making his mark with a no-nonsense approach. OTAs have been marked by high structure, attention to detail, and swift corrections on the field.
“He’s got energy, but he’s focused,” said veteran backup QB Case Keenum. “It’s a very professional atmosphere. We’re not wasting a single minute.”
Under Johnson, the Bears are emphasizing precision and tempo — a shift from prior years, where pace sometimes lagged in spring practices. The hope is that these habits carry into camp and set a new tone for 2025.
Caleb Williams Adjusting to NFL Speed
No surprise here: Caleb Williams, the Bears’ No. 1 overall draft pick, is attracting the most attention. His arm talent is undeniable, but the OTAs are more about mental reps than deep bombs.
Williams is being asked to absorb the playbook, identify blitzes, and execute clean pocket mechanics — all while adjusting to NFL speed. While there have been a few misfires, coaches remain encouraged.
“We’re asking a lot of him early,” said Johnson. “But the kid’s locked in. He’s hungry to learn and he’s not rattled.”
Observers say his timing is improving each session, and he’s quickly building chemistry with WRs DJ Moore and Rome Odunze.
Injuries Create Early Opportunities
The absence of starting left tackle Braxton Jones has opened the door for Trapilo — but he’s not the only one benefitting from injuries.
- Kyler Gordon (CB) and Colston Loveland (TE) are also missing from action, giving reps to second-team players.
- WR Velus Jones Jr. is working through a minor soft-tissue issue but is expected back before minicamp.
These injuries are not believed to be serious, but they are offering lesser-known players a shot to prove themselves in live reps. Coaches are closely watching how young depth players handle increased responsibility.

Eyes on Joint Practices Ahead
Looking forward, the Bears are expected to host joint practices with the Miami Dolphins and travel to meet the Buffalo Bills during preseason.
These high-intensity matchups will offer a true test for both Trapilo and Williams, who will face real pass rush and secondary pressure in live action.
Joint practices are often more revealing than preseason games, as they put young players in high-speed, situational football with constant coaching feedback. It’s here that final roster decisions begin to crystallize.
Why Trapilo’s Rise Matters
The left tackle position is one of the most critical on any NFL roster, especially when protecting a franchise rookie quarterback. If Trapilo can continue to grow and challenge Braxton Jones, it gives the Bears something they’ve lacked for years — depth and flexibility on the offensive line.
With a new quarterback under center and a new coach setting a higher bar, any breakout performance could shift expectations heading into training camp.
What do you think of Trapilo’s early rise in OTAs? Should the Bears give him a real shot at starting? And how do you feel about Caleb Williams’ progress so far?
