ILLINOIS — A devastating crash on Interstate 55 early Sunday morning left two people dead and one injured, prompting a major police investigation and significant traffic disruptions in DuPage County.
Fatal Collision Shuts Down I-55 Northbound
The crash occurred just south of Lemont Road around 3:30 a.m., according to WGN-TV. Illinois State Police responded to the scene of the three-vehicle collision, confirming that two individuals were pronounced dead at the site. Their identities have not yet been made public as authorities notify next of kin.
Northbound lanes of I-55 were completely closed, with traffic being diverted at I-355 to allow for investigative work. Additionally, the ramps from I-355 to I-55 northbound were also blocked off.
One Person Hospitalized, Cause Still Unknown
One other person was transported to a local hospital with injuries. The severity of their condition has not been disclosed, and CBS News Chicago reports that the exact sequence of events leading to the crash remains under investigation.
Authorities have not released information about road or weather conditions at the time, and it’s unclear whether impairment or speed were factors in the incident.
