CHICAGO — A serious crash in the West Town neighborhood Sunday morning has left a 9-year-old girl in critical condition and a 34-year-old man in police custody, according to the Chicago Police Department.
The crash occurred between 10:30 and 11 a.m. near the 1000 block of North Western Avenue. Police say the man was driving southbound in a Lexus SUV when he collided with an eastbound Lexus sedan at the intersection of Thomas Street and Western Avenue. Following the initial crash, the SUV reportedly struck three unoccupied parked vehicles.
Several Injured, Child in Critical Condition
Three people in the SUV were injured:

A 9-year-old girl suffered multiple head, face, and arm fractures and was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, police confirmed.

A 13-year-old girl in the same vehicle sustained facial lacerations.

The SUV driver, a 34-year-old man, had bruising to his body.
Both the teen girl and the driver were taken to a hospital and listed in good or stable condition.
Inside the Lexus sedan, an 11-year-old girl was also injured. She sustained minor head trauma and was transported in good condition, authorities reported.
Driver Taken Into Custody
Following the incident, police took the 34-year-old SUV driver into custody. He was issued nine citations, and officials say pending charges are under review. The driver of the Lexus sedan was also issued one citation.
The Major Accidents unit is currently leading the investigation into the crash.
