West Virginia Weather: Heat Index Near 100°F With Possible Storm Relief Midweek
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Dangerous heat continues to grip much of West Virginia this weekend, with a heat advisory in place through Saturday evening and heat index values approaching 100°F. The National Weather Service warns that isolated late-day thunderstorms may develop, potentially affecting travel and causing power disruptions across the region.
Hot, Humid Conditions Across Kanawha Valley
The Kanawha Valley, including Charleston, South Charleston, Dunbar, and Nitro, is enduring oppressive heat with highs in the low 90s. Forecasters warn residents to take precautions during the peak afternoon hours:
- Stay hydrated
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activity
- Seek shade or air-conditioned environments
Isolated thunderstorms expected after 3 p.m. may bring frequent lightning, heavy rain, and hazardous driving conditions, particularly along Interstates 64 and 77.
Thunderstorm Risks and Power Outage Preparedness
The National Weather Service cautions that the most intense storms could lead to brief visibility reductions and slick roadways, especially during evening commutes. Power companies are on alert for storm-related outages as a result of downed trees or lightning strikes.
Despite the steamy conditions, overnight lows are expected to remain warm, hovering near 69°F, contributing to lingering humidity and discomfort overnight.
Midweek Forecast: Slight Relief in Sight
While the oppressive heat will dominate through the weekend, a slight cooling trend is forecast to begin Monday, with a return to near-normal summer temperatures by Thursday.
Five-Day Charleston Forecast:
- Sunday: High 93°F, heat index 100°F, chance of storms late
- Monday: Mostly sunny, high 87°F
- Tuesday: Sunny, high 92°F
- Wednesday: Mostly sunny, high 91°F, storms possible after 2 p.m.
- Thursday: Partly sunny, high 86°F, scattered storms possible
Residents are advised to monitor local updates and stay alert for any additional weather warnings if storms intensify in the coming days.
