Western Pennsylvania Thunderstorm Alert: Heavy Rain and Wind Gusts Until Late Tonight
PITTSBURGH — Residents across western Pennsylvania should brace for a night of heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and the potential for flash flooding, with storms already moving through the region Sunday evening.
The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms that could impact communities until late tonight, particularly during the 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. window when the strongest cells are forecast to develop.
Damaging Winds and Flooding Possible
The threat includes localized flooding in urban and low-lying areas, as rainfall rates may be high enough to temporarily flood streets, underpasses, and highways. Some storms may produce wind gusts strong enough to knock down tree limbs and cause isolated power outages, especially during the late afternoon and early evening hours.
Emergency officials are urging residents to charge phones and essential devices, and avoid travel during peak storm times. Drivers should especially avoid attempting to cross flooded roadways, as the risk of rapid water accumulation remains high.
Calmer Conditions Briefly Return Before More Storms
After the storms pass overnight, Monday will bring a short reprieve with partly sunny skies and highs in the low 80s. However, another round of thunderstorms is likely Monday night into Tuesday, potentially triggering additional flash flooding threats during Tuesday’s morning commute.
Key traffic corridors such as I-376 and I-79 could face delays during peak hours if downpours re-emerge as forecasted.
Five-Day Forecast for Pittsburgh
- Monday: Partly sunny, high near 83°F

- Wednesday: Showers and possible thunderstorms, high near 87°F
- Thursday: Partly sunny with storm chances, high near 85°F
