CHICAGO — A 72-year-old man was shot in the leg during an attempted robbery in the city’s Belmont Cragin neighborhood late Friday night, authorities confirmed.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the victim was attacked around 11:30 p.m. in the 5300 block of West Belmont Avenue while parking his car.
As first reported by CBS News Chicago, the suspect approached the man and attempted to steal his belongings through the car window.
Gun Fired During Struggle, Injuring Elderly Victim
When the elderly man opened the door, a physical struggle ensued between him and the would-be robber.
During the altercation, a handgun fell and discharged, striking the victim in the leg, according to CBS. The suspect then fled the scene.
Neither the firearm nor the suspect has been located as of Sunday.
Victim Drives Himself To Hospital Despite Injury
In a display of resilience, the injured 72-year-old drove himself to Community First Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, as reported by FOX 32 Chicago.
The Chicago Police Department’s Area 5 detectives are handling the investigation. No arrests have been made.
