CHICAGO — A little girl who had been missing for nearly four years has been found alive in a Chicago apartment, ending a long-standing investigation that began when she was just a 1-month-old infant, authorities confirmed this week.
The child’s mother — who was wanted on multiple outstanding warrants in Illinois and California — has been arrested after U.S. Marshals and Chicago police executed a search operation earlier this month.
Case Began in 2021 With DCFS Missing Persons Report
The ordeal began in November 2021, when the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) reported the disappearance of the infant girl and her biological mother. At the time, both were classified as missing, with concerns over the child’s safety due to the mother’s legal history and known aliases.
Over the next several years, the case remained cold despite various leads across jurisdictions.
Mother Wanted on Multiple Charges Across States
According to ABC 7 Chicago, the woman was wanted on charges including:
- Retail theft in Cook County, Illinois
- Possession of stolen property in Orange County, California
- Robbery in Signal Hill, California
Authorities believe she relocated frequently to avoid detection.
Breakthrough Came After Second-Floor Sighting
In early 2025, Chicago police and U.S. Marshals received a credible tip that led them to two possible addresses within the city. Surveillance operations began in earnest.
One key moment came when a small girl matching the child’s description was reportedly seen peeking from a second-floor window at one of the identified residences. Investigators then coordinated with federal agencies to organize a forced entry.
Child Located, Mother Attempts Escape
On June 3, 2025, law enforcement officials raided the residence and found the missing child inside, confirming her identity with the help of DCFS and child welfare experts.
During the operation, the child’s mother allegedly tried to flee the building but was quickly apprehended by officers outside the home, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
Officials have not released the name or specific address of the individuals involved, citing the ongoing investigation and the child’s protection.
Child in Protective Custody, Investigation Ongoing
The girl has been placed in DCFS protective custody, and officials say she is now receiving proper care. No information has been released regarding her condition or whether she had access to medical or educational services during her time in hiding.
The Cook County State’s Attorney is expected to file formal charges related to parental abduction, child endangerment, and interstate fugitive violations.
